Samit Banik :

I started learning tabla at the age of 9 years when I was studying at class three. Under the guidance of late Sumanta Chakraborty, who was the disciple of legendary Ustad Keramat Khan, I learnt for 8 years. After his demise I continued learning tabla from Sri Siddhartha Bhattacharya, who was a student of Pt. Shyamal Basu, till 2002. After that I continued learning tabla from Pt. Abhijit Banerjee who is one of the most sought after creative artists in the realm of Indian classical music.

During all through this learning stage I have performed in solo tabla and also as an accompanying artist. I played at Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre,EZCC many times on their invitation, at Sundarban which was organized by Sundarban Unnayan Parishad and at almost all the auditoriums in Kolkata.

I was awarded with Sangeet Ratna from Bangiya Sangeet Parishad and Sangeet Bhushan from Pracheen Kala Kendra (Chandigarh). In the festival of Chhatra Yuva Utsav, which was organized by State Government of West Bengal (Krira and Yuva Kalyan Bibhag) on 1995,I achieved the first position in tabla. Among my testimonials I possess Junior Diploma from Prayag Sanget Samity (Allahabad) in 1991. For last 15 years I am training the students who were learning not only tabla but also other musical instruments like sitar, sarod, violin etc. and also the students of vocal.

My expertise lies in playing tabla with Kathak dance for last few years. Under my active guidance nowadays some of my students are playing well. Other than tabla, I can be handy with Srikhol, Khanjira, Naal etc. I can also play Harmonium and Mouthorgan.
